Starting in 1999 Land Rover introduced a new engine to the Defender and Discovery lineup. This was a 2.5 litre 5 cylinder turbo-diesel. Although it had some growing pains and went through several evolutions, this engine proved to be a great powerplant for Land Rover. It was used in the Defender between 1999 and 2006, and the Discovery II from 1999 to 2004. It was mated to both standard and automatic transmissions.
