Defender 90 / Defender 110 - TDCI 2007 to 2016 - Front When manufacturing a 4x4, the propshaft angle between the two end flanges is precisely engineered to make universal joint vibration imperceptible. Universal joints at each end are deliberately misaligned—or phased—to further suppress this vibration. However, suspension lifts alter these propshaft angles, often resulting in noticeable vibration. While off-road vehicles typically mask this through aggressive tyre noise and engine sound, road-oriented lifted vehicles will find the resulting drone and vibration intrusive. The most effective solution is a double cardan joint at the gearbox end, which successfully reduces vibration on vehicles lifted approximately 2". Beyond this height, even double cardan joints may struggle to manage the angle without some vibration occurring. Note that wide-angle propshafts do not cure suspension-induced vibration, as they don't alter the shaft-to-flange angles; any perceived improvement comes from the new, heavier shaft in pristine condition. Wide-angle propshafts are instead necessary for vehicles with extensive travel suspension, where full axle compression would cause the original yoke to bind, potentially straining and locking the shaft. A 32-degree yoke accommodates typical long-travel setups with approximately 11" travel shocks. Double cardan joints contain two universal joints connected by an intermediate shaft, with synchronized phasing that compensates for the speed variations of a single joint, thereby minimizing vibration. Terrafirma double cardan propshafts are direct replacements requiring no transfer box flange adaptor. STC4858 differential input flange required for D1 & D2 rear fitment.
