The Terrafirma Plastic Raised Air Intake for the left-hand side is a critical yet often overlooked modification for serious off-road vehicles. While snorkels frequently top upgrade lists, a raised transmission breather system deserves equal priority. The reality is that water crossings rarely reach depths requiring snorkel protection, yet just 18" of water can cause catastrophic damage requiring expensive differential rebuilds. All vehicle gearboxes and fluid reservoirs expand and contract as they heat and cool during operation, necessitating a breather system. When a hot axle suddenly enters cold water, it quenches and contracts, drawing in air through the breather—or water if submerged. The seals are designed to contain fluid, not repel water ingress, so submersion allows water to mix with oil. This contaminated mixture rapidly deteriorates seals, bearings, and gears, leading to premature failure. Please note: a raised air intake alone does not make your vehicle fully waterproof for extended water crossings. Comprehensive additional modifications are required to achieve this level of protection.
