A critical yet often overlooked modification for serious off-roaders, the raised air intake assembly represents essential protection for your vehicle's drivetrain. While snorkels get most of the attention, extending your transmission and axle breathers is arguably more valuable. The reality is that deep water crossings rarely require a snorkel, but 18" of water can easily cause catastrophic damage to differentials and other components—repairs that quickly become expensive. During normal operation, gearboxes, axles, and fluid reservoirs heat and cool continuously, requiring breathers to manage fluid expansion and contraction. When a hot axle enters cold water, it contracts and draws air inward. If submerged, the axle casing will pull water past seals designed to retain oil rather than repel water. This contamination degrades seals, bearings, and gears rapidly, leading to premature failure. Submerging more of your vehicle means more components benefit from extended breathers. Terrafirma's range covers all major casings including front and rear differentials, gearbox, transfer case, and timing housing, with breathers routed to the vehicle's highest point—typically the raised air intake. While raised transmission breather kits significantly reduce water ingress and should be considered among your top off-road investments, they cannot guarantee complete protection during sustained deep-water use. Additional waterproofing measures are necessary to fully prepare your vehicle for extended wading conditions.
