Front Wide Angle Propshaft - Terrafirma Fitment: Defender 90 | Defender 110 | Discovery 1 - 300TDI /V8/TD5 When manufacturing 4x4 vehicles, propshaft angles relative to the end flanges are precisely engineered to minimise vibration from universal joints*. The universal joints are deliberately phased out of synchronisation to further control vibration. Vehicle suspension lifts alter these critical angles, frequently resulting in noticeable vibration. While hardcore off-road use typically masks such issues through engine noise and slower speeds, road-oriented lifted vehicles often experience objectionable noise and vibration that requires attention. The most effective vibration solution involves installing a double cardan joint** at the gearbox end, which proved essential on Discovery 2 models. Double cardan propshafts successfully reduce vibration on vehicles lifted approximately 2". Suspensions exceeding 2" of lift may find even double cardan joints struggle to manage the angles without vibration. It is important to note that wide angle propshafts do not eliminate angle-related vibrations—any perceived improvement comes from the new shaft's superior condition, not the design itself. Wide angle propshafts serve a different purpose: they are required for vehicles with extended travel suspension systems where full axle extension would cause the original propshaft yoke to bind, potentially straining joints and locking the shaft solid, which can result in catastrophic shaft failure.
