The angle of a propshaft relative to its end flanges is precisely engineered during manufacturing to ensure universal joint vibration remains imperceptible. Universal joints at both ends are deliberately phased out of sync to further control vibration. Suspension lift alters these critical propshaft angles, often resulting in noticeable vibration. While aggressive tyres and engine noise typically mask this on hardcore off-road vehicles, road-focused lifted vehicles often find the resulting drone or rattle unacceptable. The most effective solution is fitting a double cardan joint at the gearbox end, which successfully reduces vibration on vehicles lifted approximately 2". Beyond this height, even double cardan joints may struggle to manage the angle without vibrating. Wide angle propshafts do not actually eliminate angle-related vibration—the perceived reduction is coincidental to having a new, heavier shaft in optimal condition. However, wide angle propshafts are essential for vehicles with very long travel suspension systems. At full axle compression, standard propshaft yokes can bind and strain the joints, potentially locking the shaft solid or causing catastrophic failure. A 32-degree yoke and joint accommodate typical long travel setups using approximately 11" travel shocks. Universal joints speed up and slow down during rotation when working at an angle. Double cardan joints comprise two universal joints connected by an intermediate shaft, with phased joints that synchronise to overcome the speed variation of single joints, thereby reducing vibration. Terrafirma double cardan propshafts are direct replacements requiring no transfer box flange adaptor.
