When a 4x4 leaves the factory, the propshaft angle relative to its end flanges is precisely engineered to keep universal joint* vibration imperceptible. The universal joints at each end are deliberately misaligned—a technique called phasing—to further suppress vibration. Raising the suspension changes these propshaft angles, frequently resulting in noticeable vibration. On hardcore off-road vehicles, aggressive tyres, engine noise, and transmission sound typically mask this effect, allowing drivers to tolerate the additional drone or rattle. However, vehicles with road-focused setups will find this noise and vibration unacceptable and seek solutions. The most effective remedy is installing a propshaft with a double cardan joint** at the gearbox end, which proved essential for the Discovery 2. Double cardan propshafts successfully reduce vibration on vehicles lifted approximately 2". Lifts exceeding 2" may still experience vibration despite the double cardan joint's capabilities. A common misconception is that wide angle propshafts eliminate suspension-related vibration. They do not—vibration stems from the shaft angle relative to its flanges, which a wide-angle shaft doesn't alter. Any apparent improvement comes from the new shaft's superior condition rather than its design. Wide angle propshafts serve a different purpose: they're essential for vehicles with extensive travel suspension. During full axle droop, standard propshaft yokes can bind, straining joints and potentially locking the shaft solid, sometimes causing it to fracture.
