Rear Propshaft - Wide Angle for Defender 110 TD5 (2002-2007) When manufacturing 4x4 vehicles, propshaft angles relative to the end flanges are precisely engineered to minimize vibration from universal joints*. The universal joints are deliberately misaligned—a technique called phasing—to further control vibration. Suspension lifts alter these critical angles, often resulting in noticeable vibration. While hardcore off-road driving typically masks this noise through aggressive tyres, loud engines and transmissions, and slower speeds, road-oriented lifted vehicles often find the resulting drone and rattle unacceptable. The most effective solution for vibration elimination is installing a double cardan joint** at the gearbox end, proven essential on Discovery 2 vehicles. Double cardan propshafts successfully resolve vibration issues on vehicles lifted approximately 2". Lifts exceeding 2" may exceed the double cardan joint's angular capacity. It's commonly misunderstood that wide angle propshafts cure suspension-related vibration. Since vibration stems from shaft angle relative to end flanges, a wide-angle shaft alone won't resolve this. Any apparent improvement comes from the new, heavier shaft in perfect condition rather than the angle design itself. Wide angle propshafts serve a specific purpose: vehicles with extended travel suspension systems. At full axle droop, standard propshaft yokes bind, straining joints and potentially locking the shaft solid—capable of splitting the shaft entirely in extreme situations.
