Universal joints at each end are deliberately misaligned—a process called phasing—to further control vibration. Suspension lifts alter these carefully calibrated angles, frequently resulting in noticeable vibration. While hardcore off-road vehicles typically mask this through aggressive tyres, engine noise, and slower speeds, lifted road-biased vehicles often find the resulting drone and rattle unacceptable. The most effective vibration solution is installing a double cardan joint** at the gearbox end, proven essential on Discovery 2 models. Double cardan propshafts successfully eliminate vibration on vehicles lifted approximately 2". Beyond this height, even double cardan joints may struggle to accommodate extreme angles without vibrating. Note that wide angle propshafts do not resolve vibration caused by raised suspension, as they don't alter the shaft-to-flange angles. While new heavy shafts may seem to reduce vibration, this is coincidental rather than structural. Wide angle propshafts are designed for vehicles with extended travel suspension, preventing original yoke binding during full axle compression, which can strain joints and potentially split the shaft entirely. A 32-degree yoke and joint accommodates typical long travel suspension configurations using approximately 11" travel shocks. * Universal joints speed up and slow down during rotation when working at an angle. ** Double cardan joints contain two universal joints linked by an intermediate shaft, phased to synchronize their motion, eliminating the speed variation of single
