Rear Wide Angle Propshaft for Defender 90 & 110 - 300TDI/TD5/TDCI Defender 90 300TDI 1994 to 1998 - Rear | Defender 90 TD5 1998 to 2002 - Rear | Defender 90 TDCI 2007 to 2016 - Rear During manufacturing, 4x4 propshaft angles are precisely engineered relative to the end flanges to keep vibration from universal joints* imperceptible. Universal joints at both propshaft ends are deliberately misaligned—a process called phasing—to further control vibration. Suspension lifts alter these carefully calibrated propshaft angles, frequently resulting in noticeable vibration. While hardcore off-road use typically masks this through aggressive tyres, engine noise, and reduced speeds, road-oriented lifted vehicles often find the resulting drone and rattle unacceptable. The most effective solution is installing a double cardan joint** at the gearbox end, proven essential on Discovery 2 models. Double cardan propshafts successfully address vibration in vehicles lifted approximately 2". Lifts exceeding 2" may exceed what even double cardan joints can accommodate without vibration. Note: Many assume wide angle propshafts eliminate suspension-related vibration. This is incorrect—vibration stems from shaft angles relative to flanges, which wide-angle shafts don't alter. Any perceived improvement results from the new, heavier shaft in pristine condition. Wide angle propshafts serve a different purpose: they're essential for vehicles with extended-travel suspension where full axle drop causes the original yoke to bind, straining joints and potentially locking or fracturing the shaft.
